Jesus Tempted
Jesus Tempted (Luke 4:1-13)
Summary: Jesus begins his journey to the cross in the wilderness, in which he proves himself the beloved Son of God, the Savior of the world.
After His baptism, Jesus is led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness, where He fasts for forty days. During this time, the devil tempts Him three times. First, the devil urges Jesus to turn a stone into bread, but Jesus responds that we live not by bread alone but by God’s word. Next, the devil offers Jesus authority over all the kingdoms of the world if He will worship him, and Jesus refuses, saying that only God is to be worshiped. Finally, the devil takes Jesus to the highest point of the temple and challenges Him to jump, claiming that angels would protect Him. Jesus answers that we must not put God to the test. After resisting every temptation, the devil departs until another time.
