Blessed Right Where You Are
Church family,
Before we open Matthew 5 together this Sunday, I want you to picture the people on that hillside.
Jesus has just come through the villages of Galilee. He touched lepers, welcomed the shamed, and sat with the sick. Crowds follow him, and they are not comfortable. They are tired fishermen, widows counting coins, parents carrying sick children, and people whose grief has no place to go. Matthew tells us Jesus sees the crowds and climbs the hill. Then he sits down, which is what a teacher did when he was about to say something that mattered, and he begins to speak.
Notice who he speaks to first. He does not begin with the strong or the successful. He looks at the tired and the worried and calls them blessed. We should understand how strange that must have sounded to people who had spent their entire lives being told they were forgotten, overlooked, or cursed by God... Someone looked at them and said God's favor rests on you, right now, exactly as you are. (What a weight to be lifted)
The word we often hear as "happy" is really closer to "deeply fortunate" or "held in God's favor." It is not a mood or a feeling you have to work up. It is a declaration about where you stand with God, spoken over people who had every reason to believe that God didn’t even know them.
As you read these twelve verses this week, I invite you to read them slowly. Let your own name sit in the text. Think about the season of life you are in, the grief you still carry from a loss, the hunger inside you have not been able to name, and the longing you have for things to be made right. Ask yourself a question. Where you see yourself in these words, and where do you hear someone, you love?
Here is what I believe with all my heart. None of us climb that hillside with our own strength and determination. We all come to this place as we are, with our brokenness in our hands. And still, God's grace SEES us there… and begins restoring the divine image that was never fully lost. That is where Sunday begins.
Read Matthew 5:1-12 this week and bring someone with you on Sunday who needs to hear it.
Words Worth Knowing:
Blessed: Deeply favored by God. It describes a standing of grace given to us, not a feeling we earn or a reward for good behavior.
Poor in spirit: People who know they cannot recover and need God. It is honest humility, not weakness.
Mourn: To grieve openly over loss, sin, and brokenness in ourselves and in the world. The promise is that God meets us as we are.
Meek: Strength that is gentle and placed under God's care.
Righteousness: Living rightly with God and with one another, the way God intended.
Mercy: Compassion that chooses not to give what they deserve, just as God has chosen to do with us.
Pure in heart: A heart whose desires are centered on God.
Peacemakers: People who actively work to heal what is broken between others, not those who just avoid conflict.
